ABSTRACT

The chapter starts with a summary of the equations used in the design of open-channel hydraulic systems, followed by the theory and basic equations used to describe the hydraulics of open-channel systems. It describes the principles of global and specific energy, sub-critical and super-critical flow, momentum, theory of hydraulic jump, steady-state and transient flow condition. The chapter includes various charts and tables for design and analysis of open-channel systems. It describes the principles of open-channel design and includes various examples of designing steady-state and transient flow in open-channel systems.
