ABSTRACT

Ethanol consumption is popularly known as alcohol consumption. The alcohol consumption practice is nearly as old as human civilization. Ethanol is a known sedative and depressant. This acts on a wide range of targets such as neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels in the central nervous system. The average volume of alcohol consumed, consumption patterns, and quality of the alcoholic beverages have an impact on the mortality and morbidity related to chronic diseases and conditions. Alcoholism is also responsible for various nutritional deficiencies and diseases in humans. This chapter discusses the nutritional deficiencies and diseases associated with alcoholism.
