ABSTRACT

Smart cities are expected to bring about high quality of life through the improved functionality of urban systems, increased efficiency and accessibility to the citizens through digital interconnectivity. Nevertheless, security and privacy protection have developed as a primary encounter for the growth of smart cities, and smart cities must ensure their citizens' individual privacy and security. The greater intricacy of the situation is the inadequacy of traditional cybersecurity protection strategies because of smart cities' heterogeneity, scalability and dynamic characteristics. Consequently, this chapter aims to identify these security and privacy issues and the technologies that smart cities employ. This chapter will also address the challenges and future directions of research on smart cities.
