ABSTRACT

Vehicular adhoc network (VANET) is the adhoc network that provides intelligent transportation services. Transportation plays a crucial role in smart city development. Transportation services play a crucial role in the development of any country. This chapter addresses issues in communication and navigation of VANET. It provides experimentation results by applying the proposed scheme to emergency situations using an intelligent navigation mechanism. Messages in VANET are mainly classified into two types—safety messages and non-safety messages. Safety information may contain various kinds of messages like traffic jam condition, accidents met by vehicles, bad weather, road conditions, collision of vehicles because of sudden break applied by the next vehicle, and so on. Non-safety information may include messages like driver details, documents, songs, movies, and so on. The proposed scheme of priority-based message forwarding reduces the time required for message forwarding by prioritizing the emergency messages for broadcasting. Vsim is a java-based simulator for testing, analyzing, and implementing different protocols in VANET.
