ABSTRACT

The need for surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures among the ethnic group is rapidly increasing. Dermal fillers are a common non-surgical cosmetic procedure for correcting skin defects from fine lines to deeper nasolabial folds, lip augmentation, and volume correction of the cheeks. Hyaluronic acid fillers are becoming popular injectable fillers due to their longer duration and excellent safety record. The ethnic group comprises the majority of the world’s population. The most obvious ethnic skin difference relates to skin color, which is dominated by the presence of melanin. The polymer provides photoprotection properties of the skin and influences the rate of skin aging changes in ethnic skin. Skin wrinkling and sagging signs, as well as increased pigmentary problems, are seen in ethnic skin. A hyperpigmentary response is thought to be induced by signaling by the protease-activated receptor-2 in combination with its activated protease increases in the epidermis of skin of color. Studies show that the more darkly pigmented people retain younger skin compared to lightly pigmented individuals due to the changes in skin biophysical properties. Furthermore, the stratum corneum (SC) barrier function is stronger in darker skin. Skin sensitivity is similar across different racial groups, although the stimuli for its induction are different. The growth of the ethnic patient population is rapid due to the increased diversity of skin types and shifting trends. Therefore, procedures targeting the ethnic group are also bringing more ethnic patients into the clinic.
