Two novel low band gap copolymers composed of benzodithiophene and thienopyrazine monomers were synthesized and applied as photoactive donor materials in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. Polymers with donor:acceptor mole ratios of 1:1 (PBDT-TP) and 5:1 (PBDTn-TP) were prepared. The thermal, optical, and electrochemical properties of the two copolymers were investigated. Under simulated standard solar light conditions (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm–2), the solar cell device with PBDTn-TP as a donor material provided a higher power conversion efficiency (3.58%) than the PBDT-TP polymer-based device (2.77%) and an improved open circuit voltage (V OC). The relationships between photovoltaic performance, energy levels and film morphology were investigated.
