It is demonstrated that simultaneous addition of UV-curable silica nanoparticles (UVC-NPs) and polymerizable surfactant greatly reduce the threshold and saturation voltages of a reverse-mode polymer network liquid crystal (R-PNLC) device based on a conventional reactive mesogens (RMs)/LC composite. Electro-optical measurements and morphological observation reveals that surfactants contribute to not only reduction of the anchoring energy of LC in R-PNLCs but also inhibition of aggregations of UVC-NPs.
