Abstract

Many factors contribute to uniform electrochemical processing in industrial applications. The electrochemical cell provides the foundation for the process and as such an effective geometry is critical to obtain desired properties and to maximize process efficiency. Faraday Technology has engineered and developed a patented cell geometry that provides a uniform boundary layer thickness to dampen uneven localized current distributions and promote consequent plating uniformity for full size printed circuit board panels. While the technology has been validated for full-scale printed circuit boards, it is applicable to any electrochemical process. The cell has been extensively characterized in terms of boundary layer thickness and uniformity as well as plating thickness distribution and a number of processing cells have been developed based on this design for a variety of industrial applications. Characterization data is discussed along with scaling of the cell technology from an engineering perspective.
