Abstract

An energy economy based largely on renewable sources (solar, wind, wave etc) requires energy storage to act as a buffer between generation and the customer. This Vittorio de Nora Award Lecture provides an opportunity to review the possible role of electrochemical technology, particularly redox flow batteries, to meet this demanding application. The soluble lead acid flow battery being developed in Southampton is discussed, highlighting its advantages and the technical barriers to commercial operation.
