Abstract

In the smectic C*(SmC*) phase of hexakis(4-(4'-((s)-6-methyloctyloxy)biphenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (SMOCP), the temperature dependence of the dielectric constants was measured in the frequency region between 5 and 400 Hz. With decreasing temperature, a peak was observed in the dielectric permittivities, ε', and dielectric losses, ε'', just below the isotropic liquid (Is)-to-SmC*-phase transition point. Upon lowering the frequency, the peak became higher and its position shifted towards lower temperatures. Using the frequency dependences of ε' and ε'', a Cole-Cole plot was obtained, which related that the dielectric relaxational intensity Δε was large, and about 270 at 436 K. On the basis of these results, we suggested that the obtained dielectric behaviors were due to the Goldstone mode in the SmC* phase.
