In this paper, we propose a method for rendering translucent objects which takes into account subsurface scattering phenomena. To calculate the luminance of a translucent object, we introduce a convolution-based approach which uses the luminance distributions caused by a set of incident light beams to the object surface. The luminance distributions of the light beams are calculated from a pair of sampled distributions. Depending on the incident angle of the light beam and the material parameters of the translucent object, the luminance distributions are interpolated in an angular parameter space obtained from the original planar space. We also propose an efficient method for calculating the convolution using light beams of different sizes. Several rendered images of translucent objects lit by slanting light beams demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method.
