Harold Varmus is nominated to head US National Cancer Institute

US President Barack Obama has nominated Nobel Prize winner Harold Varmus to head the US National Cancer Institute. The appointment does not need Senate approval.
The appointment is unusual because from 1993 to 1999 Dr Varmus headed the National Institutes of Health, the parent agency of the cancer institute. Since January 2000 he has headed Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
He is also co-chair of President Obama’s council of advisers on science and technology.
While he was head of the National Institutes of Health Dr Varmus nearly doubled the institute’s budget, which this year is $5.1bn (£3.5bn; €4.1bn).
