Abstract
High-precision IR gasometry and pulse-amplitude modulated fluorometry were used under field conditions to study photosynthetic CO2 exchange, transpiration (H2O release), and the light stage of photosynthesis in intact fully expanded leaves of 15 varieties of topinambour (Helianthus tuberosus L.). At the end of the growth period, fresh weights of the root system and tubers were determined. Water delivery from the roots to shoots was found to be the limiting factor for photosynthetic gas exchange. The results also showed the proportional relationship (R 2 = 0.88) between the weight of root system and tuber crop productivity. It is concluded that the root system plays the primary role in variety-specific features of water supply to leaves in topinambour plants: the root system was the rate-limiting factor of photosynthesis and accounted eventually for different productivities of tuber crops. Based on the results obtained, the fresh root weight indicative of root system development is recommended as a useful trait in breeding for plants with a high yield of topinambour tubers.
