Formation History of the Valanginian Deposits, Southwestern and Central Crimea

Abstract

Correlation of the Valanginian sections in Southwestern and Central Crimea was refined on the basis of the methods of cyclo- and sequence stratigraphy. Using the Sr-isotope stratigraphy (SIS) method, the age of the carbonate rocks of the Zelenogorskoe Series in the Beshterek River valley in Central Crimea was determined as early Valanginian (87Sr/86Sr in the range of 0.707343–0.707355). Four lithological complexes have been identified by the facies analysis of sedimentary rocks: deep-water clay, shallow limestone, shallow sandstone, and deltaic sandstone and conglomerate. The specific features of their spatiotemporal relationship made it possible to establish the upper Berriasian–lower Valanginian and the upper Valanginian sequences, separated by an unconformity. It is shown that they formed in the environments of the outer, middle, and inner ramps of a marine basin bounded by the “Tauric” island in the southwest and by the “Scythian” land in the northeast. The developed models of depositional environments were used to compile paleogeographic charts. The obtained results can be used for the improvement of the regional stratigraphic scheme of the Lower Cretaceous in Crimea.

Notes

  1. Hereinafter, modern coordinates are used.

  2. Lamination is the inner structure of a bed, created by fine laminae, which are similar in structure and composition, whereas bedding (stratification) is the property of sedimentary strata to be divided into beds (Vassoevich, 1950; Botvinkina, 1977; Geologicheskii…, 2012).
