Abstract

The authors analyze the dynamics of the main socioeconomic indices in neighboring regions of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. They evaluate the terrotiorial gradients along the borders as one of the main factors of cross-border cooperation. They characterize demographic differences, depths, and directions of economic transformation of neighboring regions, as well as their influence on existing cross-border interaction and outlooks for different forms of cooperation. Today, border regions as part of the economic, political, and social systems of the three countries develp within a rigourous framework that determines the main conditions of their growth. Differences in energy costs in the domestic market, as well as in the abilities of each state to conduct an active anticrisis policy, including support of agriculture, explain the intensified differences between neighboring territories. However, the structure of their production potential, inherited from the Soviet Union, has created a high demand for economic integration.
