Abstract
The electrochemical dissolution (destruction) of zirconium and zirconium alloy (fuel rod cladding) in nitric acid solutions was studied. The dependences of the dissolution rate on the concentration of nitric acid, temperature, and composition of the electrolyte were determined. The maximum dissolution rate of the samples is observed in dilute nitric acid at elevated temperatures. The surface oxide film on the samples and the precipitates formed during dissolution were analyzed. It was proposed to use the destruction products of zirconium-based claddings of fuel rods for the synthesis of matrix materials and immobilization of fission products formed in the spent nuclear fuel.
