Modeling gravitational convection in suspensions

Abstract

A double continuum model is proposed to describe the gravitational convection in rarefied suspensions in a broad range of the ratio of phase densities. The similarity parameters are determined and the limiting case of low-inertia particles is considered, in which the problem formulation is significantly simplified. Examples of numerical calculations of the gravitational convection during the sedimentation of heavy particles in a viscous medium in a tilted two-dimensional rectangular cavity. The results of calculations confirm the well-known experimental fact of an increase in the effective sedimentation rate of a dispersed impurity in a vessel with walls deviating from the direction of gravity.
