Abstract

Results of a study of activity complexes on the Sun in the period from 2009 through July 2014 are reported. The definition of a activity complex is discussed. Regularities in variatons of indices describing the power of activity complexes and in the temporal and spatial distributions of activity complexes on the solar surface are considered. The development of activity complexes in Cycle 24 is distinguished by a high degree of north-south asymmetry. New activity complexes tended to originate near already existing structures (within 20°–70°), and were formed simultaneous with or soon after their disappearance (after one to four Carrington rotations). It is proposed that precisely the dynamics of activity complexes determines the properties of the development of the cycle as expressed through Wolf-number indices.
