Abstract
It is shown that the chemical formulas of A m−1Bi2BmO3m+3 Aurivillius phases containing perovskite-like slabs of different thicknesses can be expressed through the formulas of the simplest layered compounds and several perovskites, representing them in the form of infinite series. Those members of such series which may have integer m and compounds that may undergo cation ordering in the perovskite-like slabs, accompanied by a change from ferroelectric to antiferroelectric ordering, are identified. Phases in which the oxygen octahedra of the perovskite-like slabs are occupied by cations of the same type (a sharp ferroelectric transition is possible) are indicated. It is suggested that the concepts of layered compound and layered solid solution need a more accurate definition.
