Nonlinear character of ion cyclotron waves (Pc1 pulsations) with a spreading dynamical spectrum

Abstract

New types of Pc1 geomagnetic pulsations with a narrow dynamical spectrum at the onset of an event and with a very broad spectrum during the development of the process have been analyzed. The observed phenomena can be divided into three types according to the evolution of their dynamical spectra: (1) events with a spectrum spreading toward low frequencies, (2) events with a symmetrically spreading spectrum, and (3) events with a spectrum spreading toward high frequencies. All events were mainly observed at local night during the recovery phase of moderate magnetic storms. It has been proposed to interpret spreading Pc1 pulsation spectra as manifestations of ion cyclotron wave nonlinearity.
