Quantitative assessment of natural risks based on satellite observation data (case study of thermokarst plains)

Abstract

A new approach to assessing the risk of the impact of the thermokarst process on engineering constructions is considered; the approach is based on satellite observation data and methods of the mathematical morphology of landscape. The equations for risk assessment are derived for linear and areal constructions for processes with the Poisson distribution of free-form thermokarst sites. Testing areas with thermokarst lakes have been digitized and theoretical assumptions and empirical data are examined for agreement between them.
