Physical anthropology of two tribal groups of Amazonic Peru (with reference to artificial cranial deformation)

Abstract
Results are presented of a field work carried out in Amazonic Peru on 106 individuals of both sexes (42 males and 64 females) belonging to the Shipibo community of Yarinacocha, and 25 individuals of both sexes (17 males and 8 females) belonging to the Huarayos of Tambopata river. The collected data are both anthropological and physiological. The morphological characteristics of these populations have been compared with the results previously obtained among the same groups or others belonging to the same linguistic family. Some adult Shipibo heads showed the consequences of the artificial cranial deformation practised at least 30 or 40 years ago.
Kurzfassung
Die Arbeit bringt morphologische und physiologische Befunde aus einer Untersuchung von 42 Männern und 64 Frauen aus der Gemeinde Shipibo/Yarinacocha und von 17 Männern und 8 Frauen, die zu den Huarayos vom Tambopata-Fluß gehören. Die morphologischen Eigenschaften beider Populationen werden mit Befunden verglichen, die in vergangenen Jahren bei denselben Gruppen oder bei solchen derselben Sprachfamilie gewonnen wurden. Die Köpfe einiger erwachsener Shipibo zeigen noch die Folgen einer künstlichen Schädeldeformation, die mindestens 30 bis 40 Jahre zurückliegt.
