An unusual new fossil click-beetle (Coleoptera: Elateridae) from the Middle Eocene of the Grube Messel (Germany)

Abstract
A new click-beetle, Macropunctum angulosum n. sp. (Insecta, Coleoptera, Elateridae) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) Fossillagerstätte Grube Messel (Germany) is described. It is unique among the species of Macropunctum in possessing a lateral edge at the pronotum. The taxon Macropunctum is closely related to Agrypnus, Lacon and Adelocera. Together they form the Agrypnini, with Macropunctum as the presumable sistergroup of the others. Species of Macropunctum are only known from two localities in Germany, the Grube Messel near Frankfurt/M. and the Eckfelder Maar (Eifel). Both Eocene Lagerstätten are sediments from ancient lakes, transferred to bituminous clay stone because of oxygen free and abiotic conditions.
Kurzfassung
Ein neuer Schnellkäfer, Macropunctum angulosum n. sp. (Insecta, Coleoptera, Elateridae) aus der mitteleozänen Fossillagerstätte Grube Messel bei Darmstadt wird beschrieben. Die Art ist einzigartig innerhalb von Macropunctum, indem sie eine Seitenkante am Pronotum besitzt. Macropunctum ist nah verwandt mit Agrypnus, Lacon und Adelocera. Gemeinsam bilden sie die Agrypnini, mit Macropunctum als vermutliche Schwestergruppe aller übrigen. Arten von Macropunctum sind bislang nur von zwei Fundstellen bekannt: Grube Messel und Eckfelder Maar in der Eifel. Beide Lagerstätten sind Seesedimente, die unter abiotischen und sauerstoff-freien Bedingungen in bituminösen Tonstein umgewandelt wurden.
