Dinoflagellate age of the boundary between Ieper and Panisel Formations (Early Eocene) at Egem, Belgium, and its significance

Abstract
A section of the upper part of the Sables de Mons-en-Pévèle and overlying Panisel Formation, exposed in an excavation at Egem, western Belgium, is classified into the Pentadinium laticinctum Assemblage Zone (B-2) and the Phthanoperidinium comatum Assemblage Zone (B-3). The boundary between these zones coincides with the boundary between the Ieper and the Panisel Formations at Egem. The boundary is marked by non-deposition and is therefore an important lithostratigraphic as well as paleogeographic datum. The datum is recognized in neighbouring regions and a revised correlation presented.
Kurzfassung
Der obere Teil der »Sables de Mons-en-Pévèle« und die darauf liegende Panisel-Formation, die in Egem (W Belgien) freigelegt wurden, werden in die Pentadinium laticinctum Assemblage-Zone (B-2) und Phthanoperidinium comatum Assemblage-Zone (B-3) eingereiht. Die Grenze zwischen diesen Zonen stimmt mit der Grenze zwischen den Ieper- und Panisel-Formationen überein. Diese Grenze wird durch eine Ablagerungslücke gekennzeichnet und ist dadurch von lithostratigraphischer wie auch paläogeographischer Bedeutung.
