Abstract

Three chelid turtles are reported from the Salamanca Formation (Maastrichtian – Danian) of Argentina. On the basis of new material recovered at Cerro Hansen (Chubut province, Argentina), two chelid turtles are described. One new taxon Salamanchelys palaeocenica n. gen. n. sp. is probably closely related to the Phrynops s. l. complex; one Chelidae indet., has uncertain affinities among the Chelidae. The extant genus Hydromedusa is also represented by Hydromedusa cf. casamayorensis, whose record in the Salamanca Formation extends its geological distribution back to the Danian. The presence of these chelid taxa in the Patagonian Danian supports the hypothesis of an early differentiation and diversification of chelids on Gondwanan landmasses.

Kurzfassung

In dieser Studie werden die verschiedenen Schildkröten der Salamanca-Formation (Maastrichtium – Danium) anhand von kürzlich in der Umgebung von Cerro Hansen (Provinz Chubut, Argentinien) gemachter Funde vorgestellt. Es werden zwei neue Taxa von Chelidae beschrieben, darunter Salamanchelys palaeocenica n. gen. n. sp., die sich wahrscheinlich dem Phrynops s. l. -Komplex anschließen lässt, und Chelidae indet., ebenfalls neu, deren Beziehungen zu anderen Schildkrötentaxa noch unklar bleibt. Außerdem wurde Hydromedusa cf. casamayorensis nachgewiesen. Ihre Anwesenheit unter den Schildkröten der Salamanca-Formation erweitert die Reichweite dieser Gattung bis in das Danium. Das Vorkommen dieser Chelidae-Taxa im Danium von Patagonien stützt die Hypothese einer frühen Differenzierung und Diversifikation der Chelidae auf den Landmassen Gondwanas.
