The 1 : 5000 Urban Geological Map of Catalonia

Abstract
Since 2007, the Institut Geològic de Catalunya (IGC) runs an urban geological mapping project to provide accurate geologic information of county capitals and towns with population larger than 10 000 inhabitants in Catalonia (NE Spain). This represents 131 towns that host 6 million inhabitants and cover 2200 km. 30% of the area of interest belongs to the Greater Barcelona urban area, which has a population of 3.5 million and represents the core of one of the main economic centres of SW Europe. The 1 : 5000 Urban Geological Map of Catalonia (MGZUC5m) is made for geoscientists and other professionals related to geology that require ground information of urban environments. The MGZUC5m represents a systematic urban mapping survey that provides a self-consistent database to be used in targeted studies related to urban planning, geo-engineering works, pollution and other important environmental issues that society will face within next years in Catalonia. This kind of geological characterisation can be easily implemented to other regions of the world. The methodology required for the systematic characterisation of the urban areas in Catalonia has been established, and after 5 years of MGZUC5m development the first maps have been published. In this paper are presented the components that compose these maps and the methodology used to produce them.
Kurzfassung
Der Geologische Dienst von Katalonien (Institut Geològic de Catalunya ? IGC) hat 2007 eine geologische Aufnahme aller katalanischen Städte und Gemeinden im Nordosten Spaniens mit mehr als 10 000 Einwohnern begonnen, die präzise geologische Informationen bereitstellen soll. Das betrifft 131 Gemeinden mit insgesamt mehr als 6 Millionen Einwohnern und umfasst ein Gebiet von 2200 km2. 30% dieses Gebietes gehören zum Ballungsraum Groß-Barcelona mit einer Bevölkerung von 3,5 Millionen Menschen, einem der wichtigsten ökonomischen Zentren in Südwesteuropa. Die Geologische Stadtkarte 1: 5000 von Katalonien (MGZUC5m) soll Geologen und anderen Fachleuten dienen, die Informationen zum Untergrund benötigen. Sie ist eine systematische Aufnahme der städtischen Gegebenheiten und eine widerspruchsfreie Datengrundlage für zielgerichtete Studien zur Stadtplanung, zu ingenieurgeologischen Arbeiten sowie zu Umweltverschmutzungen und anderen Umweltaspekten, mit denen die Gesellschaft in Katalonien in den kommenden Jahren konfrontiert sein wird. Diese Art der Betrachtung lässt sich zwanglos auf andere Regionen der Erde übertragen. Die Methoden zur systematischen Charakterisierung städtischer Räume Kataloniens sind nun etabliert, und nach fünf Jahren der Entwicklung der MGZUC5m sind die ersten geologischen Stadtkarten veröffentlicht. Wir beschreiben hier die Komponenten dieser Karte einschließlich der Methoden ihrer Erstellung.
