2022, Aquaculture ReportsCitation Excerpt :Cyp19a, a gene encoding aromatase, was mainly expressed in the ovary and played a crucial role in gender differentiation and ovarian development (Park et al., 2008). In lower vertebrates, the deletion of cyp19a, which could convert testosterone to estradiol, resulted in males from a female-biased condition (Ramsey et al., 2007). As a key gene for estrogen synthesis, cyp19a was involved in regulating the sex differentiation of many species such as birds (Elbrecht and Smith, 1992), fish (Park et al., 2008), amphibians (Sakata et al., 2005), and reptiles (Crews and Bergeron, 1994).
