Siplace even more flexible and customer focused

Article Type: Industry news From: Soldering & Surface Mount Technology, Volume 20, Issue 3

Klaus Helmrich and Guenter Lauber talk about the Carve-out of Siemens’s Electronics Assembly Systems Business Unit.

As part of its ongoing portfolio restructuring, Siemens is planning to “carve out” its Electronics Assembly Systems (EA) business unit and turn it into a legally independent subsidiary of its Drive Technologies Division (DT). Siemens decided to take this step after many deliberations, because EA’s business enjoys no noteworthy synergies with the other activities of the Drive Technologies Division and will be able to operate more flexibly and with even more customer orientation as an independent unit.

Klaus Helmrich, CEO of Siemens’s Drive Technologies Division, explains the reasons as follows: “The purpose of the carve-out is to enable EA to respond to the needs of its Siplace customers more flexibly, with speedier processes and with more direct access in the regions. This decision underscores Siemens’s strong interest in positioning EA even better than before as a reliable, stable and secure partner for its customers all over the world. It is Siemens’s objective to provide the global Siplace team with the best possible preparation for its path to independence. As EA continues to be the global technology leader, the carve-out is the logical next step to serve Siplace customers in an even more flexible and customer-focused manner.”

Günter Lauber, Head of Electronics Assembly Systems, agrees: “As a globally operating solution provider for our specific industry, we have always been a somewhat special member of the Siemens family. Since the Siplace team has already completed most of the unit’s realignment with great success, this very welcome step to independence couldn’t come at a better time. We can tackle many items now that were on our agenda for the coming years in order to get ready for the future and the global market.”

Electronics Assembly Systems with more than 2,000 employees and manufacturing and development sites in Munich, Bruchsal, Singapore, Shanghai and Norcross, USA, as well as 74 sales and service locations, is scheduled to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Drive Technologies Division within Siemens’s Industry Sector by the end of the current fiscal year. Besides, a spin-off, Siemens is also considering other options such as a joint venture with another successful company in the electronics industry.
