Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

Despite the uncertain global markets at the moment, exporting and expansion abroad is still a key facet of success financially. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make up the majority of total number of UK companies, as well as a significant part globally. Yet they, as a group, are less inclined to invest in exporting enterprises, despite the possible gains to be made. The excessive competition, combined with limited resources compared to large multi-national corporations, means that SMEs are often risk averse. As such, the authors of the article reviewed have investigated the potential motivations behind SMEs looking to export, and how they can be encouraged to do so. It is clear that exporting strengthens SMEs, and they need to be as strong as possible to be able to withstand future market and financial turbulence.

Practical implications

The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.
