ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 faces major hurdles

Wednesday, July 20, 2022

Significance

More than a year later, ASEAN faces difficulties in advancing its core objectives: building a single integrated regional digital economy and narrowing the digital divide within member states, particularly between urban and rural sectors. Nevertheless, the bloc views ADM 2025 as a critical tool in the region’s recovery from the pandemic.

Impacts

  • ADM 2025 will be subject to political competition between regionally influential powers, particularly China and the United States.
  • Digital consumer platforms could be a template for e-government, and online finance and health care.
  • With the UN seeing a 25% increase in urbanisation in the next four years in South-east Asia, demand for digital services will rise.
