Women's rights and gender equality have gained growing attention over the past decades, both at international and national levels. In order to promote equality between women and men in the world of work, international labour standards and national legislation have been adopted on a wide range of related issues. However, workers are often unaware of their rights derived from these standards.

This guide is intended to bridge that gap. It focuses on states' or employers' obligations, and corresponding workers' rights, relating to gender concerns based on the ILO Conventions and Recommendations.

The guide incorporates information on sexual harassment, women in development, the glass ceiling and many more topics. Other major developments are included under gender mainstreaming and other gender issues, fundamental principles and rights at work, globalization, export-processing zones, part-time work and workers with family responsibilities.
