Purpose – Discusses the use of technology in recruiting and training Generation Y. Design/methodology/approach – Outlines the characteristics of Generation Y (born late 70s to 2002) and considers their implications for the accounting profession and accounting firm recruitment. Suggests using computer simulations and describes some which have been used to attract students into the profession. Considers use of the internet including videos posted on YouTube, accounting firm websites and social networking sites. Looks at computer simulations for learning including KPMG’s Tax Learning and Development, which reinforces traditional instruction and allows for active participation and instant feedback. Urges accounting firms to embrace technology in order to appeal to Generation Y. Originality/value – Describes some technological initiatives to help with Generation Y recruitment and training.
