A theme of many of the articles in this edition could be seen as “learning outside the classroom”. In the authored articles Martyn Sloman continues his research and writing about “moving from training to learning” and provides interesting international comparisons on “Barriers to progress in learning”. Elena Vasilieva and Sally Watson discuss outdoor development in their article “Wilderness thinking”. They champion the use of a retreat model that raises fascinating issues about “spiritual development.”

Rob Taylor shows how SMEs (small/medium enterprises) can benefit from real workshop activity that focuses on business issues. His article on “Keeping it real” demonstrates that workshops have to be based around the problems that managers bring and they must not be just re-badged training events.

Graham Dawes outlines the learning from “Mistakes” and shows how a developmental focus on live mistakes in the business can be fruitful. Sarah Schulman completes the authored articles with a highly personal account about engagement in her piece “Crossing the generational divide”.

The first review article on “Interaction over instruction” keeps up the theme of learning outside the classroom with an overview of some interesting research. “A little more conversation” reprises the action learning evidence on the value of dialogue as a basis for learning.

“The future of workplace learning” picks up Martyn Sloman’s theme of moving from training to learning and “The crucial role of managers in individual learning” discusses some issues in the work place such as the dangers of negative feedback and the differences between single and double loop learning.
