Poland will miss its full renewable energy potential
Tuesday, December 13, 2022
Significance
According to the Warsaw-based Institute for Renewable Energy, Poland’s installed capacity in solar power is nearly 12 gigawatts, already exceeding the government’s 10-gigawatt projection for 2040. The government has also overseen large-scale projects in offshore wind implemented by national champions Polish Energy Group (PGE) and PKN Orlen.
Impacts
- National energy companies will seek out partnerships with international businesses.
- Lack of political support for renewables and high wholesale electricity prices will reduce Polish industry’s competitiveness.
- Inflation driven by high energy prices will be at the centre of parliamentary elections in autumn 2023.
