Abstract

An exact solitary Alfvén wave is found using kinetic theory. The wave has a long structure in the direction of an ambient magnetic field and a short structure with a size comparable to an ion gyroradius in the perpendicular direction. It propagates in a direction oblique to the ambient magnetic field.
