Abstract

We show that the near degeneracy of the low-lying vector (T1u) and axial-vector (T1g) levels in an isolated C60 can provide a simple pairing mechanism in C602, C603, and the KnC60 crystal. This gives rise to the possibility of a ‘‘boson’’ band in KnC60, in addition to the usual fermion bands. The implications for superconductivity are discussed.
