Period tripling in periodic flows through curved pipes

Abstract

We study numerically the laminar fully developed region of periodic flows through curved pipes. Under certain conditions the results exhibit period tripling. This striking feature is reminiscent of one of the possible routes to chaos which typical nonlinear dynamical systems take.
