A quantal method is presented to investigate the spatial development of inelastic scattering cross sections in heavy ion reactions. Application is made to the case of 1120 MeV ${}_{}{}^{208}{}_{}{}^{}\mathrm{Pb}$${+}^{238}$U($0^{+}$,$2^{+}$,...,${40}^{+}$).
