Abstract

We obtained spectra for the reaction Ar40(α,α1)Ar40 for Eχ(Ar40)6.25 MeV at θlab=176.3° and intermediate angles and for incident α energies of 12Eα15 MeV in steps of 0.25 MeV. The appearance or nonappearance of peaks at this back angle allows one to discriminate between natural and unnatural parity for about 30 levels in Ar40. Combining the present results with published spectroscopic information leads to new unambiguous Jπ assignments for some levels and the confirmation of previously determined values for others.

NUCLEAR REACTIONS Ar40(α, αi), 12<~Eα (MeV)15; ΔEα=0.25 MeV; measured yield (E,Eα, θ). Ar40 deduced levels, natural target.
