Paramagnetic and Optical Spectra of Ytterbium in the Cubic Field of Calcium Fluoride

Abstract

The paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Yb3+ in CaF2 was observed at 20°K and 3 cm wavelength. The spectrum is described by a cubic spin Hamiltonian H=gβH·S+AS·I with g=3.426±0.001, S=12, A171=(886.5±1.5)×104 cm1, A173=(243.2±0.4)×104 cm1, I171=12, I173=52. The ratio of magnetic moments is μ173μ171=1.3749±0.005. The optical spectrum shows lines of 9774A, 9770A, 9763 A, and more diffuse and unresolved bands at 9080 and 12730 A. The paramagnetic spectrum is explained as arising from the Γ7 doublet. The other levels are removed by at least a few cm1 leading to an isotropic g value of 3Λ or 247 for the lowest Γ7 level.
