I. INTRODUCTION

The American Indian today presents a series of unusual—and in some respects unique—biological, medical, and humanitarian challenges. It will be the purpose of this presentation to attempt to delineate the nature of some of these challenges, and especially those of a genetic nature. Meeting these challenges will not only provide data of considerable scientific importance, but also data of real value to the Indian as in the Americas he progresses toward those greater opportunities which must be his.

We realize there is an element of presumption in relative newcomers to the field such as ourselves entitling this presentation a “prospectus.” Many people, some of whom in due course we will ac-knowledge, have thought long and hard about the problems we will be discussing. However, to the best of our knowledge, to date no one has assayed a comprehensive look at the series of related genetic and para-genetic questions...
