INTRODUCTION

The history of adenosine-3′,5′-phosphate (cyclic 3,5-AMP) is a brief one. This compound was discovered a little more than five years ago simultaneously and independently in a biological laboratory (Sutherland and Rail, 1957; Rail et al., 1957) and in a chemical laboratory (Cook et al., 1957). Since then, enough information has accumulated to indicate that a full understanding of the biosynthesis, metabolism, and biological properties of cyclic 3,5-AMP will be essential for the understanding of certain aspects of the regulation of metabolism and function of many animal tissues. In this discussion we shall attempt to outline the established role of cyclic 3,5-AMP in certain regulatory processes. We shall also indulge in what is hoped to be profitable speculation by discussing some instances in which cyclic 3,5-AMP may play a role. In both the recapitulation and speculation it will be necessary to evaluate the role of glycogenosis in certain regulatory processes...
