Abstract

The key objective of this work was to observe the effect of chemical treatments on the oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibres. The OPEFB fibres were treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) by 3% of concentration and 7 hours of soaking time. The treated OPEFB fibres were subjected to Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The FTIR spectroscopy and XRD performed using Spectrum RXI and Shimadzu XRD 6000 respectively. The FTIR result shows that the physical properties of the treated OPEFB fibres changed due to amount of amorphous materials removed. While the XRD results show the major crystalline peak occurred at 2θ = 29.8°.
