Abstract

Nanostructured cellulose has received tremendous attention due to its inherent unique properties. Being the most abundant organic polymer on earth, cellulose is the most suitable candidate for alternative replacement of petroleum-based products. Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) can be converted into thin films, aerogels and hydrogels. In particular, nanofibrillated cellulose suspension can form a neat and transparent thin film that has good film properties. Subsequently, this thin film can have numerous potential application areas such as in packaging, electronic etc. The objective of the study was to prepare nanofibrillated cellulose from local forest species namely Mahang gajah. After successful production of NFC, thin film was prepared from NFC and compared with commercial NFC. NFC was successfully produced from Mahang gajah possessing 19.7±17 nm width. Thin film produced from Mahang NFC showed comparable properties with commercial NFC such as thermal stability, porosity and wettability.
