Estimate of shear viscosity in insulating crystals

Abstract

The shear viscosity of insulating crystals is estimated using a recently derived relaxation time expression. The relaxation time per mode, identified with the inverse of the one-phonon half-width, is calculated for a simplified model of a face-centred cubic lattice with nearest-neighbour interactions. `The shear viscosity is found to be of the order of 10-5 poise for rare-gas crystals.
