Abstract
Generalized Backlund gauge transformations depending on arbitrary functions are introduced. They are used to generate wave solutions of the Davey-Stewartson equation. In particular a version of the Davey-Stewartson equation which is completely integrable in the Hamiltonian sense is considered. In this case different forms of extended string-type wave solutions are given.
