Abstract
The heat kernel expansion of the diffusion operator on a manifold with boundary is discussed. Several examples serve to find the general form of the coefficient B4 for both Robin and Dirichlet boundary conditions. This coefficient is the one responsible for the trace anomaly in quantum field theory.
