Abstract

The article starts with a brief survey of some of the problems of high-energy particle physics. This is followed by sections dealing with particle accelerators and the production of beams of particles. The performance of four main types of particle detector is then described in some detail. These are scintillation and Cerenkov counters, bubble and spark chambers. A number of different detectors that are, at present, less common and less important are briefly described.

The emphasis of the article is on the capabilities of the different types of instrument and on their limitations; a short bibliography is given that lists more detailed reviews of the various devices.
