In 1939, Jenkins and Segre published spectra of the principal series of sodium and potassium, in which the quadratic Zeeman effect was clearly observed for the first time. They were able to observe lines perturbed by a magnetic field of 2.7 T and for which the upper states n p 2P had principal quantum numbers up to n = 35.
