Abstract

Almost all of the material in the Universe is in the form of ionized gas or plasma. The interstellar medium is a low-temperature, low-density plasma whilst the interiors of stars are made of extremely hot and dense plasmas. A variety of different plasma conditions can exist within the same star; the centre of the Sun, for example, is at a temperature of about 107 K, whereas its surface is much cooler (~6000 K).
